Hair Today, Gone Tomorrow

Over the last couple of weeks I have been feeling good and have even had a beer, a good workout, and time with friends. I am feeling great, which bodes well for round 2, which is tomorrow. I am anticipating a better aftermath, as I now know what to expect. For example, I won't eat a big, yet delicious, lunch right after 2.5 hours of poison injection. Not a good idea. Light meals, gatorade, and nausea pills; that's a plan.

So, I've been feeling so unlike a cancer patient that it was more than slightly disconcerting when my hair started to fall out a week ago. A good friend set me up with Salon Red, which gave me a series of haircuts to help soften the blow. And they did the work pro bono! Hooray!

What? You want pics?

Here we go.

Cut One, lovingly provided by Stella at Salon Red Decatur.
I call it "the mom". I think it should come with a sweatsuit and a Suburu, but still - cute and a gentle start that was much appreciated.

Cut Two, by Jodi at Salon Red Decatur.
I call it "the Rihanna". I'm pretty sure I would have to replace my wardrobe with all H&M and Urban Outfitters to actually pull this one off on a permanent basis, but it's cool to be cool for a couple of days.

Cut three, by Rebecca at the same salon.
I loved this one. I never thought I could go this short, and this was super cute and easy.

Cut four-point-five. Cara, the brave. Same place.
This was the closest I could get to a mohawk. It required a lot of gel. And would require a lot more makeup to actually rock you.

Cut final. Same girl, same place.
I'm pretty close to bald. I wasn't ready for the actual razor, so this is my hair clipped as close as possible. I didn't look the whole time and instead faced my supportive audience - Sean, my co-worker Erin (who also had her hair cut short in solidarity), Stella!, and a couple more good Salon Red folk - to gauge their response. They did alright so I did alright. Sean is thankful I actually have a round head. I did think the cut was uneven when she was done, but it actually is even - I just have bald spots now. Sigh.

So that's where we are. Quite a change. I am thankful to Salon Red for helping me ease into bald mode, and I encourage anyone who is facing the process to do the same. It was kinda fun.

More info for the record - these things feel strange on my head: showers, hair dryers, wind, my hands. Heat, cool. You name it. But this, like everything else, I will get used to. It is really the not knowing that is the tough part, and now I know. It's been 24 hours, and I'm almost used to it now.

So, off to round 2 tomorrow. Me, myself, and I (and Sean, of course) - we can do it. Wish me luck!

PS: our impromptu wedding is featured on A Practical Wedding!!! Check it out - here. It still makes me happy. Double-sigh of happiness.

  1. Ahhh, the pre-baldness shearing. Takes me back. Just so you know, you're in good company (if you click through, there's a step-by-step which your pics reminded me of). Solidarity! ;) The round head is key to rockin' the bald look, so kudos on that one.
